The Classical form of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia is a rare condition. It affects 1 in every 15,000 individuals. Given its relatively low incidence, there is not broad awareness of the condition, nor are there many organizations dedicated to assisting and connecting individuals and families living with CAH. That’s where CARES has made a difference. Individuals and families from all over the world have turned to CARES to share their personal stories and connect with others that can relate. Whether it is through the CARES website, Facebook page or a simple email, individuals have been sharing their stories with us for years.

We’d like to share one such story here, as it carries an important message for adults living with CAH. If you have a story, we’d love to hear it.

From the mother of a Maine college student living with SWCAH

Ben had an adrenal crisis Friday the 14th. He pulled into a convenience store at 2am, and passed out. Police found him at 4am, thought he was drunk, arrested him, and took him to the station. He told them he needed his emergency shot. The shot of Solu-Cortef, hypodermic needle, and signed special protocols were in a zip-lock, in his glovebox. They took the bag. Do you think they would open it and see the instructions? NO. He started throwing up in the police station, they called EMS, gave EMS the emergency bag, do you think they looked at it? NO. EMS took him to the trauma ER, handed the bag to the ER personnel, do you think they looked at it, NO. By this time (6am) he had a 103’ temp, his heart rate was through the roof, and he was in and out of consciousness. At 8am one nurse when he was lucid, asked him what meds he takes, “Steroids.” He didn’t get the shot till 9am!!! A bloody miracle he is not dead.
